To enhance the capacity and abilities of Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) officials to interact with Chinese and other nationals at the various border posts and entry points, the Chinese Consulate General in Lagos at the weekend began training for NIS officials on Mandarin (Chinese language).

Xioliang Chao, the Chinese Consul General in Lagos, in his address at the opening ceremony of the training at the Confucius Institute in University of Lagos (UNILAG), said the language programme in his consular district, is to teach the officers some daily expressions of Chinese language so as to improve communications between the citizens of both countries.

The Chinese envoy, who stated that in the coming months, about 80 officials of the NIS will join the training, which will benefit both the Chinese travellers and the NIS, added that the programme has gained strong support from Muhammed Babandele, the NIS Comptroller General.

Noting that interactions between the two countries have become more frequent, Xioliang stated that in 2017, NIS issued more than 14,000 visas to Chinese citizens, which recorded the third among all the foreign countries.

Babandele, who was represented at the event by Mohammed Alfa, Coordinator, NIS Headquarters, Zone A, posited that language is an integral part of man, a vital tool for communicating thoughts and ideas, as well as forge friendship, cultural ties and economic relationship.

He said that the timely event is in the spirit of cooperation and ease of doing business that the Chinese Consulate has offered to train NIS official, adding that under the NIS present leadership, there has been an emphasis on the training and retraining of officials to enhance their overall performance.

While enjoining participants at the pilot training drawn from Lagos State Command, Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Seme/Border Patrol Command, Lagos Seaport and Marine Command, as well as Ogun State Command, to make good use of the opportunity offered them to learn the language, Babandele expressed optimism that the training would effectively reduce the communication gaps and other hindrances encountered by the Chinese nationals as the NIS officials perform their duties.

Wang Yongjing, the Director of the Confucius Institute at the #UNILAG, commended the NIS for their effort at bridging the communication gap between the NIS officials and Chinese.

Xiaoliang expressed satisfaction at the relationship between Nigeria and China on the 47th anniversary of both countries’ diplomatic relations, which he said, has culminated into trade volume accruing to 14 billion dollars as at 2017.
