Lagos – As part of the activities to wind up the 45th anniversary of the establishment of the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC), the Lagos State Secretariat of the scheme within the week partnered with the Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency (LASPARK) to plant trees in selected communities in the state.

At the flag-off of the symbolic planting of 45 saplings to commemorate the 45th anniversary of the scheme at the Jelupon Estate field on Rasak Balogun Street in Surulere area of the state, Prince Mohammed Momoh, Lagos State Coordinator of NYSC, said that the exercise was part of NYSC’s contribution to the development of the society.

“This is part of the activities to commemorate our 45th anniversary, and it is part of our corporate social responsibility and a display of our avowed commitment to societal development.

“The NYSC scheme was founded in 1973, as a child of necessity, and over the years has contributed immensely to Nigeria’s development in various sectors and has become a child of excellence.

Momoh added: “The issue of climate and the mitigation of climate change are integral to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) which tree planting is an important aspect”.

In an interview with newsmen, Mrs Bilkis Abiola, LASPARK General Manager, who emphasised the importance of tree planting as an important source of good health and sustenance of life, praised Lagos NYSC for the exercise, saying that such laudable gestures will be supported.

The NYSC scheme was created in a bid to reconstruct, reconcile and rebuild the country after the Nigerian Civil war.

The unfortunate antecedents gave impetus to the establishment of the National Youth Service Corps by decree No.24 of May 22, 1973 which stated that the NYSC is being established “with a view to the proper encouragement and development of common ties among the youths of Nigeria and the promotion of national unity”.
