Barely one week after the Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, expelled four students, sent four on indefinite suspension and rusticated another 26, the management of the University has reversed the rustication order on 21 out of the 26 students.

The University claimed that it observed that there were errors in the rustication list earlier published on Tuesday, June 5, 2018.

Some of the affected students were handed rustication pronouncements of between two to six semesters, and would have resumed at the expiration of the sanction if not for the university’s detection of the errors.

The reverse decision was contained in a special edition of the University’s bulletin issued by the Department of Information and Public Relations, Vice Chancellor’s office, with the title “Re: Students Disciplinary Committee Recommendations”.

The statement read: “The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Victor Peretomode, on behalf of the University Senate, approved the withdrawal of the report of the Students Disciplinary Committee (SDC) as it affects 21 out of the 26 students earlier rusticated for alleged acts of examination malpractices and other related offences.

According to the bulletin, it was ascertained that the six Department Presidents in the Faculty of Social Sciences, who had earlier been rusticated for two semesters each also formed the error list.

They are presidents of Mass Communication, Economics, Political Science, Sociology, Business Administration and Geography and Regional Planning departments.

One of the departmental presidents, who do not want his name in print, thanked the University management for absolving them of the wrongdoing and prayed that God would continue to guard and guide the management with wisdom to serve the University better.

Another 400 level students whose name was expunged from the list lamented that since the rustication order on him; life had become meaningless to him ,and expressed profound appreciation to the management of the institution for the resuscitation of his aspiration and opportunity for self-rediscovery.

In his words: “May God bless Prof. Victor Peretomode and his management team for their goodwill in vindicating us”. It shows that they are meticulous otherwise the error would have gone unnoticed”.
