A former Military Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (rtd) and the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Prof. Abubakar Rasheed will be among crème-de-la crème in the Nigerian society that will witness the commissioning of various projects at the Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State.

Among the projects ready for commissioning at the eight-year-old private university next Monday are: the 18m fix Dome Planetarium, sophisticate telemedicine equipment, an ultra-modern N2billion postgraduate building and hall of residence and a state-of-the-art N1.5 million social and management science building.

Addressing newsmen on the event scheduled for May 2, founder of the university, Aare Afe Babalola, who described the ABUAD as a federal private university explained that the institution established in 2009, after his seven-year stint as the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council of the University of Lagos, UNILAG, enjoyed the patronage of students from all the states of the federation.

Speaking on the planetarium, reputed to be the first of its kind in Africa with an astronomical observatory and one of the largest fixed planetariums in the world, Aare Babalola explained that the facility with a special projector when commissioned will facilitate the commencement of academic study in space technology at the institution.

“I will transform the planetarium into a tourist centre in Nigeria and Ekiti state in particular. People pay to gain access to a planetarium in Canada, America and Japan. Why must we travel all over the world to see a planetarium when we can pay less than what they pay to view a planetarium oversees? Already, school children and people are coming from far and near to see what we are doing at ABUAD and they have witnessed how a university should be run.

“The problem of Nigerian universities is that they are still training students in curriculum inherited over 60 years ago without adding anything.

“We have added three new curricula like mechatronics, human biology and social justice. Our universities don’t want to improve on everything they inherited. The planetarium is imported from Florida U.S,’ he said.

Also scheduled for the commission is the telemedicine equipment at the 400-bed ABUAD Multi System Teaching Hospital that will also assist in the area of teleconsulting, tele-diagnosis and tele-management

According to the founder of the university, the state-of-the-art medical equipment donated by the university partners, Aster DM Healthcare of Dubai will enable the partner in Dubai to join ABUAD in performing services by proxy.

Conducting newsmen round facilities at the Multi-System Hospital, Provost of the College of Medicine, Professor Olurotimi Sanya and Hospital Consultant, Dr. Olukayode Akinlade explained that the Multi System Hospital managed by world-class Consultants and other professionals of international repute will be used to teach and mentor Medical Students.

“The services available include: Accident and Emergency, Surgery, Medicine, Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Community Medicine, Physiotherapy, Dentistry, Fluoroscopy, Endoscopy, Colonoscopy, Gastroscopy, Bronchoscopy, Arthroscopy, Bone Densitometer, Pet-Scan, Nuclear Medicine, Echocardiography, ECG and Treadmill Test as well as Function Test (PFT) among several others.

Speaking on the solutions the medical facilities will solve in a country like Nigeria, Dr Akinlade noted that the new hospital was put in place to take care of special and complex cases, thereby reducing the incessant overseas travels.

Prof Sanya added that the hospital has five special patient suites to handle, orthopaedic surgery, brain, abdominal disorderliness, Eye, Nose and Throat and kidney transplant, saying that chronic health challenges that have led to avoidable deaths will be handled at the hospital.

Addressing why public universities are failing in their duties and responsibilities, Aare Babalola identified the notion on government business belongs to no one as one of the impediments to the growth of public institutions in the country, saying that he got it right with ABUAD having learnt great lessons and examples as the best form of teacher as his guiding principles.

“I adopted this principle during my seven-year stint as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council of the University of Lagos (UNILAG). I saw the rot and decay that characterised the university; cultism, successive strike actions by various camps unions, poor dressing by teachers and students alike and dilapidated infrastructure among several others.

To redress the situation at UNILAG, he adopted the principle of ‘example as the best teacher’ by building a multi-million naira hall and donated it to the university, saying thereafter, he invited Julius Berger, Mobil Oil, shell and banks among others to join and rebuild the institution.

Emphasising that the university is not-for-profit where nobody has shares, Aare Babalola charged government appointees in university as Pro-Chancellors not to consider such appointments as a money-making venture of compensation for political pay members.

The founder who described education as a cure for all diseases like want, lack ignorance and intolerance wondered what could be responsible for the wanton kidnapping, brutal killings of innocent people and destruction of farmlands, saying that no reasonable person will kick against Western education.
