The Chairman, Osun State Universal Basic Education Board, Chief Felix Awofisayo, has said that teachers in elementary, middle and high schools in the state will not be made to take competency tests.

Awofisayo said this in an interview with our correspondent in Osogbo on Thursday.

The SUBEB chairman said the state took the time to recruit qualified and competent teachers and it did not need to subject them to competency tests.

Stressing that the state government would continue to train teachers in modern teaching methods for the purpose of improving their performance, he said, “We don’t need to set any test for our teachers. We employed competent teachers with the National Certificate in Education and Bachelor of Education degree. They were screened and even tested before we employed them.

“Those who employed HND holders and others, who are not trained teachers, are the ones having the problem. We don’t need to ask our teachers to take any test because they are competent.”

Awofisayo explained that the Universal Basic Education Commission placed a high premium on capacity building for quality officers so that they would be adequately empowered to discharge their duties effectively.

He noted that schools in the urban and rural areas across the country needed highly skilled manpower for the delivery of quality basic education, which would prepare the pupils for academic excellence.

Also, the Permanent Secretary, Osun SUBEB, Alhaji Fatai Kolawole, argued that since competency tests could be counter-productive, it was not necessary to conduct any for teachers in Osun.

Kolawole said the government had earlier invited the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board to conduct examinations for teachers recruited in 2013, just to find out if they were competent.

He said, “In 2013, when we recruited over 3,000 teachers, we invited the JAMB to test them. Those who qualified were selected and we gave them weeks of intensive training in pedagogy.

“Due to this, we don’t need to subject them to test again because we have already tested them. They don’t need tests, which may not be the best because it could be counter-productive. We also hold regular training programmes for our teachers to bring out the best in them.”

A full time member of the SUBEB, Kamar Adekunle, urged various organisations in the state to keep training their workers, including teachers, in order to make them to be abreast of events in their areas.
