An Educationist, Mrs. Oluwakemi Waniko has decried the wrong usage of words and improper spellings among students at all levels of education in the country, saying that an entrenchment of spelling skills could correct the dangerous trend.

Speaking at the 5th Scholars Quiz Primary Spelling Competition in Ota, Ogun State on Monday, Waniko attributed poor spelling skills as one of the factors responsible for mass failure in the terminal and public examinations written by students.

Thus, she charged stakeholders in the education sector, especially parents to look seriously into the effect of incorrect spellings and wrong usage in the English language in order to redress the declining education outcomes.

Waniko, who is also the organiser of the competition, said the motive of the competition was to save children from the negative effect of technological advancement, saying that the advent of information communication technology has endeared children more to the abbreviation of simple sentences on the negative side.

“We want to see how we can help our children at this tender age to develop their spelling skills so as to improve the standard of education in the country,’’ she said.

Speaking on the choice of Kwara State for the competition, she explained that subsequent editions apart from extending it to other parts of the country would also involve pupils in the nursery category across the country later in the year.

However, she urged the Federal Government to increase the annual budgetary allocation to education in order to achieve meaningful national development and tasked corporate organisations in the country to support laudable programmes like the quiz competition and other education-related events.

At the end of the keenly contested competition Kingdom Way School, Ota emerged the overall winner, while Little Saint Private Schools and the Bells Nursery and Primary Schools, both in Ota emerged second and third respectively.

The overall winner went home with a trophy, plague and N10, 000, while the first runner and second runners-up got a plague and N5,000 each.
