The Provost, Bauchi State College of Education (COE) Kangere, Dr Garba Kirfi has denied insinuations that the college has exceeded the admission limit approved by the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE).

Kirfi debunked the insinuations while reacting to complaints by students and lecturers that the institution was over populated and that students sit on windows, doors and bare floor to receive lectures.

."Contrary to the complaints, I want to tell you that the college is even unable to exhaust its students’ intake capacity of 2,200 approved by NCCE.

"The commission in 2014 approved 1,600 students’ intake and in 2017 it review it to 2,200 students but we were not able to exhaust the limit due to one reason or the other.

"You may wish to visits JAMB website and see our ceiling, it will convince you that the complaints are coming from those who does not know the operation of a tertiary institutions," he said.
He said the insinuations that the college admitted beyond its capacity was a wrong notion.

Dr Kirfi further emphasised that the college has not exceeded its capacity in terms of staffing and students as stipulated by the NCCE policy.

He however admitted that infrastructure of the institution was overstretched looking at the existing national policy that tertiary institutions should accommodate one third of its students on campus while two third live off campus.

"In terms of congestion at lecture theatres, this is applicable to all tertiary institutions across the country especially when it comes to general courses that every students offer.

"In our case, we are planning to split the number of students and allocate the general courses on Saturdays so that we have enough space as a trial and see what we can do before the end of this first semester," he said.

The Provost also complained about shortage of laboratories, lecture theatres, hostels and access roads within the campus and therefore called on the state government to assist the institution in that direction.
