The adamant Buhari administration insists on pushing for the regulation of social media in a bid to cub the spread of misinformation capable of imploding the country. This move will also see the passing of “Hate Speech Bill” sponsored by the Senate’s deputy chief whip, Aliyu Abdullahi, and which has currently passed first reading in the floor of the Senate.

While many Nigerians see nothing wrong in combating the spread of misinformation, they are however, wary of the Buhari administration whom they say cannot be trusted to not exploit the bill against the freedom of Nigerians to free speech. The fact that the bill also recommends “death by hanging” as one of the punishments for hate speech, makes it all the more nauseating.

Nobel laureate, Prof Wole Soyinka, has added his voice to the list of activists who find the “Hate Speech Bill” inappropriate and capable of doing more harm than good especially under an administration with questionable motive.
