Business enterprises and corporations do not exist in a vacuum. Their operations affect all their major stakeholders, including employees, vendors, creditors, shareholders, and especially the local communities within which they are located.

This is the baseline corporate belief of the West African Gas Pipeline Company (WAPCo), which owns and operates the 647km West African Gas Pipeline (WAGP). The organization has, in so many ways, shown its awareness of the fact that its business endeavours are not removed from its surrounding environment. Therefore, it focuses its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts in areas of Health and Environmental Preservation, Education, Social Services and Safety.

The 6th edition of the Annual WAPCo Quiz & Debate Competition for Secondary Schools, which is aimed at encouraging academic excellence and enhancing the spirit of competition between and among select secondary schools and their students, held both in Lagos and Ogun States, Nigeria.

The Lagos event held on October 28, 2019, at the Main Auditorium of the Administrative Staff College of Nigeria (ASCON), Badagry while the Ogun version held on the 30th of October, 2019 at the Conference Hall of the Maridom Palace Hotel, Ota. Participants were drawn from ten schools in each of the states, with three representatives from each school for the quiz and two for the debate sessions. The debate focused on the topic: “Is climate change a threat to humanity?’ with students debating for and against the statement. The subjects covered in the quiz were Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, English Language, Current Affairs, and Government.

Ms Rhoda Robinson, the Executive Director of HACEY Health Initiative who judged the debate competition encouraged all students present to maximize every opportunity to learn. She said “The primary goal of knowledge is to use it to make the world a better place. This debate encourages students to seek out knowledge and find ways to use it to improve their society”. She also encouraged students and guests present to take active roles in mitigating the effects of climate change and protect our environment.

The External Relations Coordinator for WAPCo, Mr Temitope Sodehinde stated that these programmes were put in place in fulfilment of the organization’s mandate to consciously affect the society within which it operates, through investments in Health and Environmental Preservation, Education and provision of Social Services. He stated that WAPCo has made investments in education through the donation of furnished modern classroom blocks with offices and stores to schools in local communities in Lagos and Ogun States; health through donating 4 fully equipped modern Hospitals with Staff Quarters and providing access to safe water in host communities by donating boreholes; and livelihood by investing over two million dollars in various skill acquisition, education scholarships and livelihood programs.

At the end of the event, Ajara Senior Grammar School, Badagry, came first in the Quiz Competition for Lagos while Lagos State Model College took the trophy for the best Debating team. In Ogun State, Iganmode Grammar School took both trophies as they came tops for both the Quiz and Debate competitions. Students and teachers present shared that were happy with the event and shared that they looked forward to next year to do better.
