The use of illustrations while teaching has proven to be one viable tool that aids learning. With the ever-growing population of students, and over-stretched infrastructure, the need to reach out to students on simpler, comprehensive and audible terms have become necessary.

The average Nigerian student is beset under poor learning conditions. From an overcrowded classroom to the noises in the background and a lecturer whose pitch has no volume.

Worse still, the students are compelled to make contributions to help them secure Public Address (PA) Systems, projectors and on rare occasions generators, which ought to have been provided by the school management.

The use of audiovisuals in schools has constantly been undermined, as lecturers and school management no longer deem it necessary to equip students with practical experiences of their course of study.

A student of University of Benin, who spoke with The Guardian on the challenges of teaching and learning in universities, said, “only science students are exposed to practical experience in my school. Those of us studying art and social science related courses have no practical experience.”

A student of Fountain University said, “there are no public address systems, we go through a lot of stress during our GNS classes as a lot of us take this, its very hard for us to hear what the lecturer is saying. When we tell the lecturer about it, they tell us to talk to the school management, and eventually nothing will be done about it.”

Also, at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, teaching aids are in use but only few are functional. “There are projectors and smart boards in almost every department but not all the smart boards are functional,” says a student who pleaded anonymity.
