Seasoned academics who gathered at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) for the yearly research fair rose from the three-day event with a call on stakeholders to partner with industries to build competencies in artificial intelligence.

Apart from investing in automation to bridge the gap with peers in developed market, the scholars tasked education managers to incorporate artificial intelligence into the curriculum.

In a communiqué issued at the end of the fair and signed by the director, academic planning, Prof. Obinna Chukwu, participants stated that our educational system should be more creative and skill- driven, with emphasis on skills acquisition through the manipulation of analytical technology.

They added that frontier technologies such as smart sensors and robots as well as virtual reality technologies are needed for development for policy formulation and implementation. The researchers observed that artificial intelligence would impact higher education especially in the areas of curricula and enrolment.

“Technology is rapidly changing cultural trends and perceptions in Nigeria. Many countries suffer from significant skills mismatches due to the inability of the education system to accurately reflect the demands of employers and the frictions in the labour market. Artificial Intelligence needs data to build its intelligence, as it would aid the development of smart city and resource utilisation.

“Technology has become a very significant element in driving value-chain processes; autonomous robots can work alongside people to increase productivity and reduce injuries. Robotic process automation provides significant benefit to organisation from cost reduction and service improvement, data quality and risk reduction.
