The Nigerian Army has offered to construct a bridge to replace the one which collapsed, leading to the death of three Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi.

The United Bank for Africa also offered to construct another bridge and a road in the university, while the Bauchi State Government is to construct a road network within the campus. The bridge linking the hostels and lecture halls collapsed at about 11.45pm on Monday following flooding after a downpour. Seven students were reportedly injured.

ATBU Vice-Chancellor, Prof Muhammad Abdulazeez, said at a press conference at the Gubi Campus on Friday that the Nigerian Air Force also offered to contribute to the development of the campus to make learning easier for the students.

Abdulazeez said the school had offered automatic admission to qualified siblings of the deceased to study at the institution.

The VC said the bodies of two of the dead students had been released to their families for burial.

He said the body of one of the students who died, Salamat, had been buried in Abuja.

Meanwhile, ATBU Governing Council has said it has constituted a seven-man committee to investigate the circumstances leading to the collapse of the bridge.

ATBU Pro-Chancellor, Ambassador Nimota Akanbi, said at the press conference they were saddened by the incident.

Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari, on Friday, called on the governing councils and management of federal institutions of learning to take the safety of their students as a priority.

Buhari made the call through a presidential assessment committee during a condolence visit to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, following the collapse of a metal bridge which led to the death of three students at the Gubi campus of the institution.
