Knee and hip pain are both commonly caused by arthritis and injuries related to over-exercising and sports, such as tendon inflammation, cartilage tears and sprained ligaments, according to WebMD and Healthline. Knee and hip pain may also occur as a result of bursitis, an inflammation of the bursa sac.
Knee pain can also occur as a result of a dislocated kneecap; Osgood-Schlatter disease; patellar tendonitis; iliotibial band syndrome; osteoarthritis; loose cartilage and patellofemoral pain syndrome, all of which correspond to various structures located within the complex knee joint, explains WebMD. Knee pain is generally localized to the knee area itself and is one of the most common types of joint discomfort reported to doctors.

Hip pain may be acute and arise suddenly as a result of extreme tendon inflammation, or it may stem from a chronic underlying condition, such as osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis, both of which slowly disintegrate the cartilage within the hip joint, notes Healthline. Elderly patients commonly experience a fall or other similar accident that causes injury to their hip and often results in a fracture. These occurrences are more frequent in senior adults as their bone density weakens with age. Additional causes of hip pain include osteonecrosis and snapping hip syndrome, but these conditions are not as prevalent as others, according to Healthline.
