UYO – Governor Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom State is reportedly set to develop entrepreneurial skills of Akwa Ibom people with a target of establishing over 30,000 Micro, Small and Medium scale businesses across the state.
The government’s decision to adopt development of Micro, Small and Medium Scale Enterprises as a pillar of his ‘completion agenda’ is said to be in line with the need to embrace entrepreneurship, as it holds the solution to unemployment plaguing Nigeria at the moment.
The immediate past commissioner for finance and commissioner designate, Mr. Nsikan Linus Nkan, gave the hint at the weekend while declaring open the mandatory continuing professional education (MCPE) seminar organised by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) in Uyo.
Nkan said the focus of the seminar on entrepreneurship was apt, timely and in line with the ongoing drive by the state government to ensure an entrepreneurially vibrant state.
He applauded members of ICAN for cueing into the entrepreneurship programme of the state, adding that it was in line with the objective of the present administration in Akwa Ibom.
Earlier, the chairman of ICAN, Uyo branch, Eteyen Ikpong, thanked Governor Udom Emmanuel for paying tuition fees for many chartered accountants of ICAN stock in Uyo, saying the intervention has led to their qualifying as Chartered Accountants.
“As at November 2018 diet, 14 members qualified as chartered accountants. This number has increased to 32 qualified members in the May 2019 diet.
“Others that have helped in the success story include the commissioner designate, Mr. Nsikan Nkan, the permanent secretary, Ministry of Finance, Mrs. Eme-ette F. Imuk (FCA); the state accountant-general, Pastor Uwem Andrew Essien (FCA); the state Auditor-general, Dr. Monday Akpan (FCA) and auditor general for local government, Mr. Francis Okon (FCA),” he said
He announced that the AKSG/ICAN Study Centre at Modern Training Institute, 133, Aka Road, Uyo, has started lectures for all levels from foundation to skills and professional cadre.
Ikpong assured that the state government has made the study tuition free for indigenes, saying that the programme is opened to HND and BSc holders, irrespective of discipline.
