The girl's family, reportedly acting with her parents' blessing, are said to have taken off their own clothes before putting the youngster on a makeshift alter.
Locals in the Ganakpara village of Udalguri district of India called police when they spotted smoke billowing out of the local science teacher’s house.
The “priest” allegedly began brandishing his sword in an attempt to chop off the toddler’s head as part of the gruesome ritual, NDTV reports.
The blood-curdling ceremony was apparently seconds away when cops saved the girl from imminent death at the hands of her relatives.
The child was reportedly related to her tormenters – the daughter of the science teacher’s sister-in-law.
The priest and teacher were arrested.
The toddler was reportedly handed over to the man voluntarily by her father.
Local reports say the girl was to be killed with her own mother watching.
All pleas to the family to stop the bloodshed were in vain, and only angered the priest, who started threatening the villagers who sought to prevent the crime, with an axe and a sword.
The family was said to be undeterred by the arrival of media and police, and the group’s erratic behaviour only grew worse.
