Nurses in Kano State have been charged to strictly adhere to the ethic of going to work on time and closing at the right time as government will no longer tolerate any form of negligence on duty.

The executive secretary, Hospitals Management Board, Dr. Muhammad Dahiru Shehu gave the warning while declaring open a two-day Capacity Building Training for Nurses, organised by the Nursing Services Department of Muhammad Abdullahi Wase Teaching Hospital in collaboration with Women for Health (W4H), yesterday in Kano, the state capital.

Shehu said Kano State government under Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje is frowning seriously against late coming and closing before the stipulated time, stressing that in the past nurses are the first to be in hospitals due to the significance of their services.

“But nowadays, when you enter around 9am you can see staff coming to work late. We need to wake up as a team of healthcare providers to see that we change this bad attitude to work.

All those things are giving us bad image. Therefore it is better we change our attitudes to work before we are forced to change by the government,” he warned.

He charged the management of the hospital to make the use of uniforms a routine in view of the fact that it has become a tradition that health professionals no longer use uniforms, reminding them that it is the uniform that attracts people to the profession.

On the training, the executive secretary commended the Chief Medical Director (CMD) and management team of the hospital for organising the event as it is in line with the present administration’s policy of training and retraining of personnel.

He charged the participants to make good use of what they are going to learn adding that other departments should emulate the nursing department.

He commended Governor Ganduje for directing the Ministry of Health to upgrade the four general hospitals in the local governments where the newly emirate councils were created and equip it with necessary gadgets so that people in the affected areas would have access to excellent health services easily.

Earlier in his welcome address, the CMD of the hospital, Dr. Abdussalam Usman Danjaji, disclosed that the training was aimed at upgrading the status of the hospital from Specialist to Teaching Hospital. He said that the training is aimed at improving the capacity of the personnel so that they will discharge their responsibilities diligently.
