A Consultant Haematologist at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi-Araba, Lagos, Prof Suleiman Akanmu, has urged Nigerians to form the habit of donating blood regularly because of its associated benefits.

Akanmu made the call during the 2019 World Blood Donor Day organised by the Department of Haematology and Blood Transfusion, Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi-Araba.

He said, “The transfusion of blood and blood products helps to save millions of lives every year. People need to know that it is very safe to donate blood and when they donate blood on a regular basis, they have huge medical advantages.

“One of the medical advantages of donating blood is that the donor will never suffer from diseases related to an excessive amount of iron in the body. There are also mental effects of donating blood regularly, which results in good physical well-being.”

The haematologist added that regular donation of blood helps the donor to break down fat in his body and protects him from diseases.

He urged Nigerians not to be scared of donating blood as only the medically fit and those with sufficient blood would be allowed to do so.

“We are also celebrating the World Blood Donor Day to appreciate individuals who have been donating blood voluntarily to save the lives of other people. We want to use this opportunity to highlight the urgent need for every hospital to operate a full blood bank,” Akanmu said.

The World Blood Donor Day was established in 2004 and observed by the member states of the World Health Organisation on June 14 every year to raise the awareness on the need for safe blood donation, storage and other related issues.
