About seven people have been allegedly killed by unknown people in Awka, the Anambra state capital.

The incident which took place at different locations within the city occurred at about nine o’clock Sunday evening while the community was rounding off its Imo Awka cultural festival.

According to an eye witness, Mr Sampson Nnagbo , a group of youths shot a boy along Udeke street , Umudioka village , Awka and matcheted him to death.

Mr Nnagbo who described the incident as barbaric appealed to the Anambra state government and security agencies to find a lasting solution to the increasing rate of cultism in the area.

A community leader , Chief Ndu Nnagbo condemned the level of cultism in the area and appealed to the commissioner of police to allow some stakeholders to form security unit that will tackle the menace.

Meanwhile the police command in Anambra state says only four people lost their lives in the incident that occurred on Sunday.

In an interview the commander, Anti Cult unit Anambra state, Mr Christopher Bassy, said the problem was between two confraternities who decided to use the cultural festival as a ground to attack themselves despite efforts by the police command to secure the entire state capital during the Imo Awka festival.

He said that the command will do everything possible to apprehend all those involved in the act and make them face the wrath of the law.

Mr Bassy therefore called on residents of Awka and environs not to hesitate to provide the police with useful information that will aid in their operations and encouraged them to go about their legal businesses.
