The Founder of Atayese Health Network, Dr Adeolu Olusodo, has said that lack of appropriate personal hygiene during menstruation period can cause infertility among women.

Olusodo said this on Tuesday in Lagos during a conference organised by the Centre for Children’s Health Education, Orientation and Protection to commemorate the 2019 Menstrual Hygiene Day.

Warning that uncleanness during the menstrual period could lead to infertility, he said, “Since menstruation is a flow of blood, the blood is an avenue for germs to grow. If the woman does not know how to check the flow well, there is a chance that she might contract an infection and spread it to the people around her.

“Eventually, the spread of the infection will get to her reproductive organ and end up causing infertility. Some people use a single pant without a pad for their cycle and they don’t wash it well. The result is that the germs on the underwear will go back to the body. And if she’s not well treated, it will cause infertility. It is a gradual process.”

The Founder, Centre for Children’s Health Education, Orientation and Protection, Mrs Betty Abah, lamented the lack of necessary hygiene materials for a large number of Nigerian females.

She said, “Women in detention, women with a mental health challenge, women in IDP camps and girls from a poor family background all deserve a hygienic cycle”

Abah also called on the government to assist the ladies in need, “It is time for the government to come to the aid of the Nigerian girl,” she said.
