Congratulations! You just completed a semester of school. Regardless of how it went, now is the time to welcome in a new one. I just shared 5 things you should do during winter break, but in today’s post, I’m sharing three things you should do before a new semester.

1. DEEP CLEAN YOUR SPACE

A new semester is a fresh start, so you want that to be reflected in your space. Give your room, bag, closet, etc. a good clean and organize it a way that makes life easier for you. Clear out the items in your closet that don’t fit the season or that you don’t wear anymore. Throw out old products and makeup that’s dried out. Put away clutter that distracts you throughout the day. Organize your kitchen items and spices, and scrub your bathroom (just do it). All of this will help your brain reset for the new semester and set you up for success.

2. FIX YOUR CALENDAR

Once you start receiving syllabi, you can start inputting dates into your calendar. For me, it isn’t the most interesting work, but it is necessary. It’s best to do it early because once you start receiving assignments and truly dive into the grind of the semester, you won’t want to take time to do it. While you’re inputting those dates, also take time to decide on some sort of system for your calendar. If you like to color-code, this is your moment.

Don’t forget to add your work schedule, extracurricular activities, and study times to your calendar. Just like budgeting gives you a real sense of your financial situation, scheduling gives you a real sense of your time management. We’ve all felt that nagging feeling when we’re enjoying free time and feel like we’re forgetting something. Having all of your responsibilities accounted for erases the guilt, so you can marathon Netflix guilt free.

3. REFLECT

This is probably the most important tip I can give you. Spend some time and think about how your last semester went. What went well? What could use some work? What do you want to continue doing in the new semester? What do you definitely need to leave behind? What people do you need to leave behind? Pull out a sheet of paper and get honest with yourself.

I like to do a quick meditation before journaling exercises to ground myself and be present. As a writer, I always have the words I want to say, and I rarely just write the ones that I need to. Meditation puts me in the now, and I journal in the present as well. I use the Headspace app, but YouTube also has some great meditations available for free if you want to try it out.

I hope you got something useful out this post and that you have some ideas for 3 things you should do before the semester begins. If so, feel free to share it via social media and Pinterest using the image below. See you all soon, and follow us on Instagram to keep up throughout the week!
