A court in Eldoret has ordered a church to pay a nurse Ksh10 million following the death of her baby at a hospital ran by the church.

Daily Nation reported that in 2004, the nurse, Silvinus Wekesa Khaemba, visited African Inland Church’s Kapsowar Mission Hospital in March 2004 to deliver her baby.

She narrated that a drip was administered to her and a few hours later, she started feeling dizzy and that was when she called a doctor.

Instead, they sent a midwife to attend to her but the medic just dealt with her briefly before leaving.

In a court statement, Khaemba explained that due to the neglect, she lost her baby and was herself left with a ruptured uterus.

In the ruling, the magistrate ordered the church to pay her the money as general and special damages for negligence.

Recently, Kirinyaga County was thrust on to the spotlight after reports emerged claiming that Kerugoya hospital, one of the county's top medical facilities, was in a sorry state signaling negligence.

The hospital had before that laid off 200 casual workers, including cleaners, which resulted in blocked toilets, unwashed linen, rotting garbage, and undisposed hospital waste.

Water shortage at the facility has made the situation dire by exposing patients and hospital staff to infectious diseases.

So dire was the situation that the national government ordered the institution to stop admitting patients.

An inspection by the joint regulatory bodies revealed more critical conditions in the hospital, other than the ones that were already in the public eye.

A report dated May 13, 2019, stated that the laboratory at the hospital could not have basic tests such as a full haemogram and urinalysis conducted, due to obsolete machines and inadequate reagents.
