Before they came to limelight, some of Nigerian celebrities did what we call odd and dirty jobs during their humble beginnings before the glitz and glamour. From Actor Benjamin a shoe maker to Mercy Johnson who was an house girl to Mr Ibu, a butcher. Here is a run down list of Nigerian celebrities who did poor jobs.

8. John Okafor

For comic actor, John Okafor, he was not in anyway born with a silver spoon, infact before raising to fame, he was a firewood seller, Hair dresser, Butcher. You could call him a Jack of all trade. From being a master firewood seller to hair dressing and working at an abattoir, John Okafor popularly known as Mr Ibu never had it easy. According to him, growing up was hard and he had to do several odd jobs to feed his family.

7. Mercy Johnson Okojie

Before the fame, money, expensive cars and house, Mercy Johnson was once a housemaid. According to her, “When I recall my humble beginning, I give thanks to God. When I remember how we moved into an uncompleted building and had to take cover whenever it rained because of the condition of the house; how my brother did a menial job as a bricklayer to earn a living and i a housemaid those days when we rolled over a stick to cover the windows up till the point when I started acting and raised money to cover the roof.”

6. Banky W

It’s hard to believe but there was a time when EME boss, Banky W took on the job of a sales boy to make money for studio time in the US. The RnB star and “High Note” crooner worked in fast foods outlets, clothing stores and as a knife salesman, selling knives from door to door.

5. P-square

The duo who went their separate ways have actually worked in a supermarket/ electrical repairer together while they were still on the street. Although they are one of Africa’s biggest artistes now, Peter once worked as a supermarket attendant and Paul did some electrical repair for pay. Now, the story is much different; as they have shows outside the country and own houses abroad.

4. Timaya

The ukwu singer popularly known as the Egberipapa 1 of Bayelsa was a mere plantain seller in the street of port Harcourt before he started churning hits. If you remember correctly his popular song , ‘Plantain Boy’? Well, that was actually a true story about the singer’s struggles before hitting fame. Back in the days, Timaya was a great ‘hustler’ and a very good Plantain seller. –

3. Joseph Benjamin

The dark and handsome actor revealed in an interview, that he was once a bus conductor, security guard, waiter, bakery worker and a shoe seller? The MTN project fame host shared this shocking revelation the various jobs before finally hitting it big in the movie industry. Who would even think that polished looking actor, model and voice over artiste went to such terrifying stage in life to fair for himself?

2, Don Jazzy

Before Don Jazzy became famous and made fellow producers feel inferior, the Mavin Boss moved to London in the United Kingdom in 2000 after his Uncle invited him to come play the drums for the neighborhood Church. He did various odd jobs including working at McDonalds as a security guard while trying to hit it big.

1. Patoranking

Patrick Nnaemeka, Patoranking went through the hells of life as he didn’t always have things rosy during the early times of his life. The singer who went from selling rat poison on the streets of Lagos to being one of the most popular dancehall artiste in Nigeria. While collecting his Headies Next Rated award in 2014, he made the revealation about his humble beginnings, and also told the story about his bricklayer and rat poison seller days.
