What happens if one of the pair of conjoined twins dies before the other?
Chang and Eng Bunker were born in 1811 in Thailand. They were joined at the sternum. An autopsy confirmed they shared a liver and could never have been separated safely. Even so, they lived a full life. They made a living exhibiting themselves before becoming farmers. They married sisters in the USA and had 21 children between them.
Chang died in his sleep in 1874 at the age of 63. Eng survived him by about three hours.

The story of Eng’s death makes for horrific reading. Chang had aged faster than Eng. He’d had a stroke and was an alcoholic. The autopsy showed Chang likely died from a brain aneurysm. At the time, it wasn’t exactly clear why Eng had died although when he found out his brother was dead he went into a panic; ‘Then I am going!’ He described feeling pain, feeling cold, and died holding Chang close to him. It’s suspected that Eng died of fright and shock.

He died just before the doctor arrived to cut the twins apart.
