Oyo state government has nullified the suspension of the rector of Ibarapa polytechnic, Iyiola Eyitayo.

There was confusion on Thursday, May 2, in Eruwa area of Oyo state as the state government nullified the suspension of the rector of Ibarapa polytechnic and principal officers of the institution by the chairman of the governing council, Samuel Ogundariji.

Legit.ng 's regional reporter in Ibadan, Newman Babson, reports that armed policemen were drafted to the institution in view of the apprehension that the students who supported the action of the chairman of governing council might spark violence.

It was gathered that the state police headquarter was put on red alert in case more officers might be needed to maintain law and order in the community.

The state government directed that the suspended rector, bursar and registrar of the polytechnic should go back to their positions immediately, saying that the action of the chairman was illegal as it was in violation of the laid down regulations of the polytechnic
The state commissioner for education and technology, Prof.J.A.Olowofela, pointed out that a report and meeting of all the supervisory board of the institution must have first been held and a decision jointly taken before such a directive should be taken and communicated to the victims.

The commissioner added that such a unilateral decision of the chairman was not acceptable to the government and therefore declared null and void.

He said that the action of the government reverting to the status quo at the polytechnic was without prejudice to the chairman of the governing council, Samuel Ogundariji, whose action was solely taken without clearance from the government and the aggrieved students who have consistently been calling for the exit of the rector.

It would be recalled that early in the week, the students of the institution carried out a peaceful protest in support of the suspension of the rector and principal officers who they accused of ineffectiveness which was responsible for non accreditation of their courses by the National Board for Technical Education (NABTE).

The non accreditation, it was learnt, was responsible for the refusal of National Youth Service Scheme (NYSC) to mobilize graduates of the institution for the mandatory national youth service scheme.
