Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata has vowed to do ‘everything’ he can to help David De Gea after his howler against Chelsea.

The Spaniard dropped a tame shot from Antonio Rudiger shortly before half-time at Old Trafford that allowed Marcos Alonso to grab a valuable equaliser for Chelsea.

It was De Gea’s third mistake in four matches and he looked inconsolable as he left the field at full-time, fearing that his error has cost United a place in the top four.

De Gea has won four of the last Player of the Year awards at Old Trafford and Mata, a close friend of the Spaniard, says he will do everything he can to help the struggling goalkeeper.

‘You know David is not a question for me,’ Mata told SkySports.

‘His level has been fantastic for this club, he’s been the best player in the last years. The points he’s saved us has been incredible.

‘We have good and bad moments but it’s how you react. He’s determined to react positively to do what he does best which is to be the best. We have 100% confidence in him.

‘Today he’s not happy but tomorrow morning he comes back with the attitude he always has. His level is unquestionable. He knows I’m here for him for everything. What I can do is give him my honest consideration about the moment, the situation.

‘He’s disappointed with the goal but after that we give confidence to him because he’s one of the best in the world but we all make mistakes. He’s strong mentally – he will save of course many goals in the next games. He’s been the best for us, he has my whole confidence.’

United’s top four hopes are all but over after the draw at Old Trafford.

Chelsea will now qualify for the Champions League with two wins in their final two matches.
