Everyone wants to be happy and successful in life, but it's not always as easy as you might think. Rather, most people end up taking whatever job they can get and simply moving on with their life. If that job offers opportunities to advance even slightly and provides enough money or benefits that the individual needs in their life, it's likely that they won't change their job unless they are forced to, but that's not really the best way to live your life, and it's definitely not the most enjoyable way.

What Are Healthy Career Goals?
If you're thinking about setting career goals, you're probably wondering about that little qualifier at the beginning: "healthy". What are healthy career goals and how would they be different from any other career goals? Well, healthy career goals are going to be important so you are able to accomplish the things that you want in your life and do it in a way that helps you along your path. Think about it, if you set goals that require you to spend all of your time at work and no time having fun with friends or family, it's not going to be healthy for you.

You want to set professional goals that allow you to continue reaching your personal goals as well, which can be difficult if you set goals that are not realistic. You want to set goals that will help you keep a good balance in your life. Don't overwork yourself and forget about the other important aspects of your life. Healthy career goals are going to push you, and they're going to help you get to a point where you are happy with your life without taking over your life entirely.

How To Set Healthy Career Goals
When you were finishing high school or finishing college or even when you first got the job you're in now, what was your plan for the future? What did you want to accomplish? This is a good starting point for your career goals and what you want to do with the rest of your life. Think about where you are now and where you would like to be in five years, ten years or even twenty years. Are you on a path that will help you get there? If you're not, setting goals that get you on the right track is crucial.

Think about balance when you're looking for your goals and keep your family and your friends in mind. Spending time with them is important to your overall health and happiness (and theirs). Don't sacrifice them in exchange for your career goals, but don't entirely sacrifice your career for others either. You need a way to get just the right balance between everything that's important to you.

What Type Of Goals To Set
Start with the basics when you're trying to start your plans and set your goals. Look at where you are now and where you would like to be. What exactly could you do that would make you happy with where you are? Think about your ultimate goal. Maybe you want to be the president of the company. Maybe you want to start your own company. Your goals are entirely your own, and only you can decide what your ultimate professional goal is. Write it down; this is what you're working towards.

Now you know where you are and you know where you're going. It's time to start setting goals in the middle of these goals. How long do you want to allow yourself to reach that ultimate goal? Remember to push yourself but be realistic. If you're currently working as an intern, you could eventually become the president of the company, but it may not happen in five or even ten years. You want to find a good balance between pushing yourself and still having time for other things in your life that you enjoy.

So look at what you'll need to do to reach the goal you've set for yourself. Will you need to go back to school? Will you need to get promoted to different positions and work your way through? Do you want a specific internship? These are all healthy career goals that you can set to help you move along the way. Write all of them down and put them in order, so that they make sense and you can achieve one after another on your way to the ultimate goal you've set.

Keep in mind that you need to look at opportunities for promotion, education, training, certification, internship, relationship building and a whole lot more. Consider anything and everything that will work together to make you more likely to reach that level you've been working for. You may be surprised just how many factors can play a part in how you can advance in your career. Of course, it's important to keep those goals and plans somewhere you can see them all the time and think about the steps that you can take towards each goal.

Working Toward Your Goals
Now that you've established your goals, what are you going to do about it? Well, the first thing that you should do is take a look at each of your goals and create a few steps for each one that will help you in the process. For example, if your first step is going back to school you should take steps that go along with it, like researching different schools, applying for scholarships and completing applications. Take a look at each of the goals you've set and then create steps to work towards them the same way.

You may have different goals that you can work toward at the same time, like going back to school and getting that first promotion at work. Maybe all of your goals have to be achieved one after another. Either way, you're going to find many steps you can take to help in your process and ways that you can continue to push yourself in a positive direction. It's going to take a lot of effort, but you're going to have some great things to go along with it.

Also important to keep in mind is that your goals and plans for the future may change over time. Maybe your goal was to be president of the company that you currently work for, but after a few years, you decide that you want to work for a different company. Changing your goals is allowed, and it's something that you should consider. Every year or every six months even, you want to make sure your written goals still align with the things you want in life. That way, you can make any necessary changes and still keep pushing forward.
