A market is a place where people gather to buy and sell. A
market is not just a place where people move around and you
get to see different kinds of goods and services both in small
and large quantities. You can also treat the market as a
shopping mall. Apart from the act of buying and selling, a
market also serves another purpose which is as a tourist
attraction. Most foreigners who visit a particular country
always want to move around and take a look at the local
markets. For that reason, we are going to be looking at the top
five biggest markets in Africa.
5. The West Hills Mall
It is located in Ghana and can be named the biggest market in
West Africa. It covers almost 93,000 square meters. It has
varieties of local products been sold there. The West Hills Mall
was opened on 30 October 2014. It is jointly owned by Delico
Property Development Limited (60 percent) and Ghana’s social
security and national insurance trust(SSNIT) (40 percent).
4. The Merkato Market
Addis Mercato or simply known as Mercato is a large open-air
marketplace in Addis Ketema, district of Addis Ababa,
Ethiopia, and the name refers to the neighborhood in which it
is located. The market used to be one of the biggest markets
in Africa. The market employs about 13,000 people in 7,100
business entities.
3. The Gateway Theater.
This market is located in the KwaZulu-Natal Province of South
Africa. It`s the largest market in the Southern Hemisphere. It
covers more than 220,00 square meters. It has more than 400
stores! Gateway Theatre was opened in 2001. It has a lot of
international fashion brands that you can try to visit! For
instance, Mr. Price , Forever New, and Zara. It is one of the top
100 largest malls in the world . It has more than 2 million
visitors coming through its door per month .
2. The Karatina Open Market
This Market is located within 130km of the capital of Kenya,
Nairobi. In this market, you will find a lot of fresh fruits, for
those that love taking fruits. This big market is located in Nyeri
County. The Karatina open-air market is one of the biggest
open-air markets in Africa. The market closes at eight in the
evening with two gates closing at six in the evening.
1. The Two Rivers Mall.
This is the largest shopping mall in East Africa. It covers a
space of 65,000 square meters. I has different kinds of shops
situated in it. Shops like; LC Waikiki, Swarovsky, luxury brands,
Adidas, Mr. Price. There is also entertainment provided in this
shopping mall.
