One of the major requirements for farmers who want to
venture into poultry farming is the need to house the birds.
The farmer has a choice of the kind of house to build
depending on scale and objectives of the poultry project.

The need for poultry house.
Chicken, whether free- range, pastured or caged require shelter
for several reasons. These are;
1. Protection from adverse weather i.e rain, wind, sun
2. For proper feeding
3. Provision of safe area for laying eggs.
4. Carry out effective poultry disease control through vaccines
and other treatment.
5. Protection from predators and pests.
6. Maximize production.
Types of poultry housing.
The type of poultry house depends on the stage in life and the
purpose of the birds.
Brooder- used to house layer chicks from 0- 8 weeks.
Grower house- used to house layer chicks from 9- 18 weeks of
age.
Brooder grower house- used to house layer chicks from 0- 18
weeks of age.
Layer house- used to house layers from 19- 72 weeks of age.
Broiler house- used to house broilers upto 6 weeks.
Breeder house- used to house male and female chicken in the
proper ratio for mating.
Design of the poultry house.
To ensure optimum production, the design of the house
should follow these factors.
1. Direction of the poultry house.
The length of the house should be in the east- west direction
to avoid direct sunshine over the poultry.
2. Size of the poultry house.
The full size of the house will depend on the number of birds
you want to keep. If you plan to use deep litter system, then
each broiler needs 1 square foot while layers requre 2 spuare
feet.
Length of the poultry house.
There's no limit to the height of the poultry house. It depends
on the number of birds and the size of the land.
Height of the land.
The recommended height of the poultry house is 6- 7 feet
(eaves) and 7- 10 at the center. If using cages, the height is
determined by the number of tiers of cages.
Width of the poultry house.
To ensure proper ventilation in the middle of the house, the
width should not exceed 25 feet. If you intend to have a width
of more than 25 feet, ridge ventilation with a proper overhang
is required in the middle.
Foundation of the poultry house.
Ensure your foundation is properly done to prevent water from
getting into the house. The foundation should be concrete and
should extend 1- 1.5 feet below ground and 1- 1.5 feet above
ground.
Floor of the poultry house.
It should be made of concrete and should be free from any
dampness. It should extend 1.5 feet from the wall to deter
vermin like rats and snakes.
Doors of the poultry house.
The doors should open to the outside of the wall. There
should be a foot bath at the entrance.
Walls of the poultry house.
The side walls of an open-sided poultry house should be 1.5
feet high to protect the birds from extreme direct wind and
rain.
Roof of the poultry house.
The roof should be made of any cost friendly material that
allows good airflow and drainage of water when it rains. The
overhang of the roof should be at least 3.5 feet so as to
prevent rain water from getting into the house.
Lighting in a poultry house.
The lighting should be placed 7- 8 feet, hanging from the roof.
Incascedent bulbs should have a spacing of 10 feet while
flourescent lights should have a spacing of 15 feet.
Conclusion.
Now that we know, what is required when building poultry
house, let's go ahead and put into action what we ha learnt.
