Oyo State Government has said its schools will remain opened despite the Federal Government’s decision not to reopen schools.

The state commissioner for education, science and technology, Olasunkanmi Olaleye who stated this in an interview with

The Guardian also added that the state would wait for the decision of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) on whether or not to partake in the terminal examination.

“We are quite aware that WAEC is a regional body and its certificate has become an international certificate through which our students compete for placements into higher institutions all over the world. Education is on the concurrent list, we are quite aware of this. However, we are waiting for the examination body’s position.

“What is important to us is that schools, especially in terminal classes will continue to remain opened. Learning will continue. We believe that examination is a very important part of educational development. So, our schools will continue classes while we continue to maintain COVID-19 protocols in all our schools.

The commissioner reminded that schools have their calendar for the year and the state would leave no stone unturned in meeting the deadline.

“Don’t forget that schools are meant to open for a particular time, particular months and within particular hours. Don’t forget that we have state examinations for primary six and junior secondary school 3 and we intend to conduct our exams.

“In Oyo State today, we have 75,562 students waiting to sit for. We are taking all issues into consideration. I believe that reason would prevail between WAEC and the Federal Government.,” Olaleye added.
