The horrific stories of rape and murder of students since the pandemic have heightened tension and panic among parents and guardians. The development has also become a source of worry to students, who have renewed call for the reopening of schools.

The students lamented that the continuous closure of schools has negatively impacted their lives.

They argued that the lockdown itself kills more than COVID-19 as they have been deprived of studying and also fending for themselves.

For the indigent ones who engage in petty trading and menial jobs on campus to survive, the students lamented that they have been left hanging since the closure without any palliative or support from the government.

While expressing concern over the continued closure of schools, President, National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS) Sunday Asuku wondered why the Federal Government would allow markets to open while schools remain shut.

“The solution to COVID-19 is not in the markets nor worship centres but in science through research. Most countries that were faced with similar pandemic have reopened their schools, the students government claimed to be protecting also go to the markets; some of them even assist their parents to sell their wares, they still mingle with friends and folks and freely move about, so what is the aim of leaving our institutions under lock and key?”

A student group under the aegis of Concerned Nigerian Students (CNS) has deplored the role of security agencies in bringing perpetrators of rape cases to book.

They expressed hope that once schools are reopened, the rape ‘saga’ would reduce.
