The Redeemer’s University, Ede, Osun State, has donated foodstuffs worth N2 million to some residents of its host community.

The university said the items were meant to cushion the effects of COVID-19 movement restrictions on the beneficiaries.

The Public Relations Officer of the university, Mr Adetunji Adeleye, said the items were presented at Timi of Ede’s palace.

The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Anthony Akinlo, said that the donation was done in support of people with extreme low-income, who might want to violate the lockdown order of the state government.

Akinlo said, “With food in the houses of these set of people, they would have no reason to go out to look for what to eat. That will reduce the risk of contracting or exposing themselves to coronavirus pandemic.”

Meanwhile, the management of Bowen University, Iwo, has also donated relief materials to residents of Iwo and Oluponna to cushion effects of COVID-19 on them.

The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Joshua Ogunwole, while presenting the items, urged the government and Nigerians to start planning for the aftermath effect of coronavirus on the economy and the general wellbeing of the people.

He said the donation was part of the university’s effort to support the state government’s efforts in alleviating the sufferings of people at home as a result of the lockdown directive of the government.

He said “As a Christian University, we are our brothers’ keepers this is why we are out to give this welfare package to the people not minding their religious inclination.

“We have invited the leaders of the Christian Association of Nigeria and the leaders of the Islamic Society of Nigeria, the representatives of the development Union of the towns, and other classified groups for the welfare package which is meant for the vulnerable under their umbrellas.”
