The Vice-Chancellor, Osun State University, Osogbo, Prof. ‘Labo Popoola, has warned that higher institutions of learning in the country must embrace online teaching or sink, saying the advent of coronavirus had imposed the new realities.

Popoola urged them to urgently revolutionise teaching and learning methods by building capacities in online teaching programmes.

The vice-chancellor charged academic staff of universities, polytechnics, and Colleges of Education to embrace virtual teaching during the lockdown period and beyond.

A statement signed by the Public Relations Officer of the university, Ademola Adesoji, on Monday, said the vice-chancellor spoke during an online interactive session with the academic staff of the Osun State University on setting a new agenda for the realities that the COVID-19 pandemic would have on the educational sector.

The statement read, “The world woke up in the last quarter of 2019 to a new virus and unexpectedly, it has turned out to be a global pandemic, catching the best economies, best medical systems, and best technologies unawares.

“Of course, it came with different conspiracy theories, including most ridiculously, the Generation 5 (5G) technology dimension. The pandemic is indeed an enormous shock to local and global governance.

“However, new world order has been imposed on humanity, and it is a reality that will not change. The question is, where do we, as universities and other higher education institutions stand in the context of the emerging realities?

“How do we prove our societal relevance, if any? How do we justify society’s investment in us? There are still many more questions, which we have to provide answers for.

“In the coming days, weeks, months, and years, we will have to completely adjust our ways, attitudes, and practices, else, we will sink.”

Popoola said the university had commenced the process of online teaching before COVID-19 came knocking, and expressed delight about enthusiasm it generated within the university community.
