The Rivers State University, (RSU) has said that it is partnering with communities in the State to stamp out cultism in the area.

The vice chancellor of the institution, Prof. Nlerum Okogbule said cult-related activities are no more in the institution as security measures have been put in place to deal with the social vices.

Though findings shows that after the alleged gang battle that claimed the lives of some students last year, there is no record of similar killings in the University.

Recall that in August 2019,a 300 level marine engineering student of the university, known as “Montana Million”, was shot dead in a reprisal attack. The killing came two days after a final year student of the department of agriculture, Barisua Tuakabari, was shot dead in a cult attack.

Speaking in Port Harcourt, Okogbule, noted that there is an improved security in the institution, adding that all rules against cultism and others vices were enforced.

The vice chancellor said, “I want to say that we have no case of cultism since I came on board. There is no hiding place for cultists here and we have done very well in that area. We are relating well with the community to ensure we get intelligence that will help us to fish out any cultist that wants to make the community a safe haven.

“There are some aspects that I will not disclose here because they are security issues, but I will only say that there is more presence of security personnel on ground. There are rules in the university and we are bent on enforcing these rules.”

He decried the epileptic power supply in the institution, which he said had forced the university to spend huge funds to generate electricity despite paying bills to the power distribution company.

Explaining that the management was visiting various faculties in the universities with a view to identifying their needs, Okogbule promised that such needs would be provided in due course.

“We have commenced a tour of the faculties. The purpose is to identify the challenges we have in the universities and also work together as a team.
