The Nigerian Meteorological Agency has said Nigeria has only 54 weather observatory stations out of the expected 9,300.

The Director General of NiMET, Prof. Abubakar Mashi, stated this on Saturday while inaugurating the ‘Surface Meteorological Station (equipment for weather data collection)’ donated by the agency to the Department of Geography and Environmental Management, the University of Ilorin.

A statement by the Director of Corporate Affairs of the institution, Kunle Akogun, said NiMET had concluded arrangement to establish regional centers of ‘Excellence in Meteorological Research’ in the six geopolitical zones of the country with UNILORIN hosting that of the North-Central.

The statement added that the event also witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between NiMET and the university.

Abubakar said the gesture was part of the agency’s contribution to the development of education in the country, adding that although universities were primarily charged with the promotion of humanity, they could not do so meaningfully without adequate attention to the weather.

He said, “Nigeria has only 54 weather observatory stations out of the expected 9,300. This has prompted the NiMET to partner universities through the National Universities Commission.”

The NiMET boss said every university was supposed to have a standard weather station, adding that there was no department in UNILORIN that would not benefit from the new weather station.

He promised that the agency would continue to support UNILORIN, not just in funding the station but also in providing the complimentary infrastructure required in the laboratories.

Earlier, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Sulyman Abdulkareem, said the equipment donated by the agency was a blessing that would enhance teaching and research in the Department of Geography and Environmental Management, as well as many other related departments and units in the university.

Abdulkareem said paucity of funds had retarded capacity in laboratory, field and classroom components of the training given to students in the area of meteorology and research.

“The intervention from your agency, which we are opening to the public today, is, therefore, an appreciable assistance,” he added.
