The Akwa Ibom State Government has shut down the Government Technical College in Uyo and suspended 34 pupils of the school for their roles in a violent demonstration that took place on Thursday on the school premises .

Our correspondent gathered that a Divisional Police officer sustained injuries in an attempt to quell the crisis, while a worker at the college is currently undergoing a surgical operation.

Several properties belonging to the institution were destroyed and the windscreen of many vehicles parked within the premises were smashed during the demonstration, which started in the early hours of Thursday

The Commissioner for Education, Prof Nse Essien, at a briefing held in Uyo condemned the pupils’ actions and berated them for turning the school into what he described as a den of hooligans.

He said the state government had instituted a full scale investigation to unravel the immediate and remote causes of the demonstration.

Promising that the pupils would bear the full cost of the damages incurred during the demonstration, he said” We cannot sit and fold our hands and watch our school, which is supposed to be a citadel of learning, turned into a den of hooligan.

“Government will constitute a full scale Investigation into the immediate and remote causes of the crisis.

“The 34 pupils, whose names were compiled after intelligence sources identified them as the masterminds of the incident, are hereby placed on indefinite suspension. They will not return to the school until their cases have been reviewed.

“The Government Technical College, Ewet, Uyo is hereby shut down indefinitely and all pupils are advised to vacate the school premises with immediate effect.”

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, N’nudam Fredrick, disclosed that eleven persons had been arrested in connection with the crisis.
