The management of Kano University of Science and Technology, Wudil and the institution’s Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) are currently at loggerheads over the poor state of infrastructure and general administration of the school.

The university teachers accused the authorities of “desperate attempt” to hike the registration fee of undergraduate students. They insisted the move was unjust and needless; especially when the management could not provide an audited account of the previous registration fee.

Rising from an emergency meeting, ASUU expressed concern over inadequate offices and laboratories, especially in newly constructed departments.

In a statement jointly signed by the chairman, Mohammad Sani Gaya, and secretary, Murtala Mohammad, the union accused the institution of frivolous spending despite non-payment of its backlog of earned academic allowance.

“ASUU noted that for a long time the university has virtually left the provision of the needed infrastructure solely for TETFund.

“The poor funding has adversely affected the smooth running of the university, resulting in inadequate offices and laboratories, especially in the newly established departments.

ASUU also accused the institution of purchasing exotic vehicles for principal officers at a cost of N200m, an amount they believed is enough to build new hostels to replace old ones recently gutted by fire.

But the university management countered ASUU’s allegations, saying the state government has released over N774 million for accreditation and N2.6 billion on infrastructure.

Besides, the management debunked ASUU’s claim on backlog of outstanding salaries, reminding that N198 million was recently paid the lecturers as part of their postgraduate research grant and an additional N200 million hazard allowance for non-teaching staff.

In a statement by the head, information and public relations unit, Sa’idu Abdullahi, the management said the increase of registration fee from N21, 500 to N23, 200 was approved by the senate.

On the issue of procurement of vehicles for principal officers, the school said the cars were purchased in accordance with the rules and guidelines as approved by the Senate.
