The National Examination Council has reached out to the Department of State Services for assistance in checking malpractices and the activities of fraudsters during its secondary school examinations.

The Chairman of NECO’S Governing Board, Dr Abubakar Saddique, said this in Abuja when he led the Acting Registrar and other management staff on a visit to the DSS Director-General, Mr Yusuf Bichi.

Saddique said, “Our council has put in place measures aimed at checking examination malpractice. Despite this, without adequate security architecture, such measures will not yield the desired results.

“Among the measures we introduced is the biometric capturing of candidates to check impersonation at examination centres.

“We, therefore, appeal to the personnel of DSS to strengthen their collaboration with NECO to prevent any form of malpractice before, during and after the conduct of the Council examination.”

The Acting Registrar of the council, Abubakar Gana, in his remarks, listed some reforms introduced under the current leadership of the council, including the development of a “secure and user-friendly corporate website, introduction of full-scale biometric capturing of candidates at examination centres, and the procurement of additional 20 pick-up Hilux vans for examination logistics.”

He added, “NECO has enjoyed the full support and cooperation of DSS through the provision of covert operations which has helped in reducing the incidence of examination malpractice.

“The world is experiencing rapid changes resulting from rapid development, these changes revolve around two major phenomena of emerging technology and globalisation. While these two phenomena have their advantages, they also come with disadvantages, especially when abused, which result in the scourge of examination malpractice, which has assumed a global dimension.”

According to a statement by NECO on Thursday, the registrar also sought the collaboration of the DSS in building an intractable system for the council to “prevent possible incidence of tempering with staff records, especially in the face of the ongoing staff certificate verification exercise.”

The registrar appealed to the director-general to ensure that fraudsters who attempted to compromise NECO examinations were not only arrested and investigated, but prosecuted to serve as a deterrent to others.

The DSS boss, in a brief address, pledged the continued support of his service in ensuring the credibility of NECO examinations.
