A professor of Information and Cybersecurity at the Federal University of Technology, Akure, Ondo State, Boniface Alese, has said there is the likelihood of a rise in the incidence of cyber crimes in Nigeria and other parts of the world in the future.

To this end, he noted, that there was a need for the Federal Government to invest heavily on research in cybersecurity as it is done in many countries of the world. Alese also called on the relevant stakeholders in the education sector to introduce cyber security programmes in Nigerian universities.

The professor stated this while delivering an inaugural lecture at the main auditorium of the university.

He said, “It has become imperative to introduce cybersecurity awareness courses to all Nigerians universities and other tertiary institutions in the country as security has become a major challenge to information technology and by extension, frontiers of human development.

“Government should join the global trend by investing heavily in researches in cybersecurity. Fighting against insurgency cannot be totally successful without adequate intelligence gathering, which can be successfully done with adequate collaboration between the academia and the security agencies.

“There should be more adequate collaboration between industries and the academia or researchers on cybersecurity.”

Alese pointed out that crime was on the increase in the society due to the rising level of sophistication and advancement in information technology, which had the power to “neutralise and demobilise physical weapons.”
