Students of the University of Abuja (UNIABUJA) have expressed displeasure over expulsion of 100 students in the institution, saying management’s decision was harsh and inconsiderate.

Recall that the management of the university had last month expelled about 100 students of the school for their involvement in examination malpractices.

But some students of the university, who spoke with The Guardian, claimed that the school management did not follow due process in their judgment, as they also expelled innocent students for the offence they didn’t commit.

They alleged that the decision of the management was too drastic and harsh, as no prior notice was given to the accused to defend themselves.

A student, who identified himself as Michael, said while some innocent students were wrongfully accused, some offenders who were influential brought their families to plead on their behalf, “and the senate accepted their pleas.”

Another student who pleaded anonymity, said, “I was shocked when I heard that they released an expulsion list during my examination period. I was shocked not because they released the list but because there was no prior notice or warning. There was no invitation, like first or second call to the panel before the victims were expelled. The management went to the extreme. Some of the affected students are innocent.”

Another 400-level student, simply called Joe, said: “It is irrational to dismiss these students without following due process. I saw the name of a friend to my classmate on that list that dreadful day. This guy is good and notable in his department. He is intelligent and a faithful Christian. He is not only a church worker, but also a nice person in reality. Many of us can vouch for him. He was supposed to write his exams in UNIABUJA in two weeks and now, his four years in UNIABUJA is a waste due to the drastic decision taken by the school management without proper investigations.”

Also, a victim of the expulsion, who identified himself as Sage, said: “I almost committed suicide when the news broke out. I honestly could not believe it. I believe people should be given fair hearing and second chance. I thought that is the way life should be. But, it seems that the system will always be corrupt and I could not bribe my way through or will I say I don’t have those who will plead my case.”

He called on the school management to reconsider its decision, and call back the affected students if possible. “They can call us back, scrutinise their decisions, caution some offenders and discipline others accordingly. They cannot throw away the baby with the bath water.”

Meanwhile, Head of Information and University Relations, Dr. Habib Yakoob, has informed that the university’s Senate approved the expulsion and rustication of the students, after due diligence.
