AN indigenous oil firm, Belamaoil Producing Limited, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the University of Port Harcourt and Usmanu Danfodio University, Sokoto, and contractors for the building of one hostel each for the two institutions.

Speaking shortly after signing the MoU with representatives of the universities, the Managing Director of Belemaoil, Mr. Pedro Diaz, said the company’s action was driven by the need to contribute its quota to the development of the education sector.

Diaz explained that when completed, the hostels would help to address the accommodation problem of students living off-campus due to the inadequacy of such facilities.

Represented by the Director, Engineering and Production of the firm, Mr. Mufaa Welsh, Diaz stated that while under construction, the firm would visit the facilities regularly to ensure that the contracts were executed according to specified standard.

“We as a company has a model and our actions are driven by the model. We have found out that we have competent hands within and that is why we use people who are within our communities. On the hostels, we have always stretched out our hands to render help to those who need it.

“In the last few years, we have sent over 23 students on scholarship overseas. We have also established an industrial park to encourage the employment of our people. We have employed over 6,000 to ensure that our waterways are safe,” Diaz stated.

In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor of UNIPORT, Prof Ndowa Lale, said the hostel would help students staying off-campus to get accommodation and avoid molestation from hoodlums outside the campus.

Represented by the Provost of the College of Health Sciences, Prof Iyeopu Siminialayi, the vice-chancellor urged the oil firm to do more for the university.

Similarly, the Pro-Chancellor, Usmanu Danfodio University, Sokoto, Hon, Justice Pearl Enejere, expressed his gratitude to the founder of Belemaoil, Jack-Rich Tein, and the management of the company.

“We are happy to be here today. Our problem is not different from the problem of the University of Port Harcourt. Our students are suffering and you need to see their situation and condition. We thank the founder of Belamaoil, Jack-Rich Tein for his magnanimity and the decision of the company to come to our aid,” Enejere said.
