The Gombe State Coordinator, Better Education Service Delivery for All, Mallam Abdullahi Bappah, has said the state opened more than 100 learning centres for female children since September to address the out-of-school challenge in the state.

Bappah, in an interview with our correspondent in Gombe, added that the agency

had gone a step further to introduce the learning centres in marketplaces across the state.

“We have established learning centres for the girl-child in Gombe markets. Once they bring their wares from the village to the market, they will go there to study for just one hour and go back. Before the end of the four-year programme, these girls will be literate. We are going to train them for nine months and then attach them to a school.

“The last of the learning centres were established in Balanga, on the border between Gombe and Adamawa states. In some remote areas more than 200 children are roaming about, hawking items or doing nothing. We were able to establish learning centres in such places,” he said.

Bappah added that 2,400 teachers and head teachers have been trained to run the centres. “The second aspect of this programme is to improve literacy and that is only possible by building capacity for the teachers.
