• Students accuse ICT dept of fraud
Dean, Student Affairs, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, (UNN), Prof. Edwin Omeje, has announced that the bed spaces of about 154 students have been revoked following their involvement in hostel racketeering.

Prior to the opening of the hostel portal, the dean had stated that he would not condone any form trading/swapping of allocated bed spaces or illegal acquiring of bed spaces.

The Guardian gathered, that there has always been difficulty in getting a bed space in the campus, but this year it has been more difficult and the most affected are the third year female students, hence the trade.

But the dean, in an official statement released last Wednesday with list of 154 matriculation numbers disclosed that the university has revoked the bed spaces of the affected students.

Omeje further stated that investigations are still on going and another list would be released soon. He also added that there would be serious sanctions for those involved as they will not be able to apply for a bed space for the rest of their stay at the university.

Some students have taken to heart this incident and have come out on social media to express their pains.

A post by an anonymous student stated, “Students are blamed for everything. It is our fault that we waited patiently last year for hostel but we did not get but special people got hostels. It is also our fault that there are corrupt officials that hoard bed spaces and sell to students who are in dire need of bed spaces,” she cried.

She went ahead to say that if the student affairs want to take disciplinary actions, they should start from the members of staff at the Information and Communications Technology (ICT). “The same way they fished out the names of students involved, they should also fish out the members of staff involved. We paid them for the bed space,” she said.
