The judge of the Court of Appeal, Enugu division, Justice Olubunmi Oyewole, has proposed that ethical values and good governance must be imbibed to achieve the desired result in nation building.

Oyewole who was the guest speaker at the 33rd convocation lecture of Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH), said we must be disciplined as responsible citizens to see the nation of our dream. He further added that our reality as a nation is that where regulations exist, we work round them and break them with impunity and would rather blame everyone but ourselves.

The judge, who spoke on the theme, “Ethical values, good governance and nation building”, said recognition and appreciation for being in service should be demonstrated and go beyond the symbolic recognition dished out to the political and business elites.

According to him, the perpetual conflicts between our uniformed personnel and the ordinary citizens could be minimised if not eliminated by an attitudinal change.

“The enormous sacrifice of these patriots could be appreciated. The nation has fought several battles including the ongoing Boko Haram insurgency in the North east. Heroes of this war are both living and deceased. We must demonstrate our appreciation in various ways, be it in scholarships and automatic job placements for wards or in soft lines of credits to survivors.“The Nigerian Police must come up especially for mention. Love flowing from us to them for the thankless service and sacrifices daily made could go a long way in solving security challenges.”

The rector, Obafemi Omokungbe said, “As an institution striving to entrench an excellent academic standard, we have as one of our core values the regard for discipline, loyalty, honesty, integrity, courage, and generally acceptable ethical behavior. It is the belief of our founding fathers that these values if well imbibed and harnessed for institution development will have implications for national development.”President, Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) Nnamdi Okwuadigbo said although the subject is global, the peculiarities of our political, social and economic structures make it particularly germane to us as a nation.
