Members of the Nigeria Library and Information Science Students Association (N-LISSA) under the aegis of the Nigeria Library Association (NLA) have called on members to strengthen the association through networking, knowledge sharing, professional participation and development.

This was the submission of the body at the end of its recently concluded conference which held at the University of Ibadan (UI).

The mission and vision of N-LISSA is to bring together Library and Information Science Students and students associations across different chapters in Nigeria as one body under the umbrella of Nigeria Library Association.

In his address to members of the association, Jude Asogwa, a graduate of UNIZIK and Editor-In-chief of N-LISSA magazine described the conference as an epoch-making event that had succeeded in bringing students from different schools in Nigeria under one umbrella.

Speaking on the low turn up of members at the conference, he stated that of the over 100 library schools in Nigeria only 12 schools were represented officially and identified long distance and cost of transportation as major hinderances.

To ensure a large turnout at subsequent conferences, he suggested that hosting should be decentralised and staged biennially.

“In fact, it can be done in such a way that if the national conference holds this year, the zonal conference can hold the following year in turns as this would encourage larger participation among the students and even strengthen the national body.

He added: “This is because if the zone forces are weak the national body cannot stand”.

Speaking in the same vein, Oluwatosin Akobe, a postgraduate student of Federal University of Technology, Minna (FUTMinna) who was present at the N-LISSA conference described the emergence of the association as a dream come true.

“We started with few young professionals and colleagues from other library schools with a burning desire to have an association that will drive the profession to an enviable height irrespective of the different schools’, adding that the journey had not been easy as there more work to be done.
