Concerned about the plight of visually impaired children, Support Hub Enrichment Centre has embarked on a free enlightenment workshop for educators and caregivers on how to manage the disability in children.

Speaking at a three-day training programme for educators at the Pacelli School for the blind, Surulere, Consultant, Omolola Oguntunde said the programme was aimed at empowering the teachers and caregivers on educating young children who are visually impaired. “If we get the foundation right, it would be easy to build up on it and give them a better chance and bright future.”

Addressing the 45 caregivers, Oguntunde said, “There is a lot such children can learn between ages 0 and seven before they go to the special schools. We start teaching them independent living skills and introduce them to things that the typical developing children learn incidentally.

“The choice of Pacelli School is appropriate because it is a specialised school for the blind and partially impaired children and with plans to start the early learning and invention centre for young children.

Early childhood educator and facilitator, Tumini Baham urged that there should be more focus on the first six years of a child, which is the formative age.

“There are different developmental areas for the special children, we focus on early learning and invention we prepare them for their environment, train and equip the caregivers. She explained the training the caregivers to identify the types of challenges in these special children, for early intervention and best remedy to save families and society of any agony. According to the Montessori certified Educator, we hear of sad report of parents neglecting and locking their blind children at home is as a result of ignorance and lack of awareness. She maintained that this training caregivers and teachers would be able to assist parents in our various areas and communities to help such parents.

Proprietress, Pacelli School Jane Onyeneri commended the group for training caregivers and others to be able to handle and manage special children with disability.

She also urged participants to use the knowledge achieved after the training to impact others positively.

A participant and Chief Executive Officer, K F Place, Kano State, Mrs Aisha Funsho appreciated the centre and other trainers for supporting the needs of special children in the society.
