Nurses at three city hospitals said they will launch a strike within weeks if the medical centers continue to ignore their demands to address staffing shortages that put patients at risk. Nurses overwhelmingly voted to authorize a strike affecting more than 10,000 registered nurses in New York City at three hospital systems: Mount Sinai Hospital, New York Presbyterian Hospital and Montefiore Medical Center.

For months, nurses have warned about overcrowding that has forced medical staff to treat emergency room patients in hallways, where they have no privacy and face the risk of infection. Nurse Anthony Ciampa said he had to choose recently between feeding an elderly patient at New York Presbyterian and treating several acutely ill patients because there weren’t enough other nurses on duty.

“She went without a meal,” said Ciampa, vice president of the New York State Nurse’s Association, which is announcing the strike vote at a Thursday news conference. “It’s not fair that we have to triage our decisions.” Nurses at the hospital have been without a contract since December, and said they are hoping public pressure will bring force hospital executives to address staffing issues.

The Nurses Association represents more than 42,000 members across the state. Although a strike was authorized by members, nurses said they would give hospitals a 10-day heads up to prepare for the walkout. “The whole goal here is not to strike,” Ciampa said. “We’re hoping it doesn’t come to that.” A hospital spokesman said a walkout would only hurt patients. “Union leadership is engaged in political brinkmanship that would force nurses to abandon patients at their bedsides,” the spokesman said. “Unfortunately, NYSNA leadership seems more concerned with advancing a political agenda than they are with reaching an agreement that is fair, reasonable, and responsible for all parties.”
