Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, has said a total of 67 Nigerians have been offered Commonwealth Scholarship to study various courses in universities abroad.

The minister made the remarks at a media conference on the 2019 Commonwealth Day Celebration in Abuja. He said since the inception of the scholarship programme in 1959, Nigeria as awarding country, had offered scholarships to students from other countries such as Sierra Leone. Also, as a receiving/nominating country, Nigerian students received awards from countries such as UK, New Zealand and Australia.

He said, “Between 2015 and 2018, over 67 Nigerians have been awarded Commonwealth Scholarship to study in other Commonwealth countries while scholars from other countries are currently studying in Nigerian tertiary institutions.”

He said the theme of this year’s celebration was ‘a connected Commonwealth,’ which emphasized the need to work together to protect the natural environment and the ocean as well as cooperate on trade to encourage inclusive economic empowerment for all people “particularly women, youth and marginalized communities.”

Activities lined up for celebration included Youth Lecture, quiz competition involving senior secondary school students within the FCT on March 5th and parade of Commonwealth flags by school children on the main Commonwealth Day Celebration, Monday 11th March, among others.
