The New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) has said that the Federal Government has empowered about 3,450 women and youths in Imo, through the Federal Government Grassroots Support Initiative.

National coordinator, Princess Gloria Akobundu, of NEPAD, made this known at the graduation of 450 women and youths trained in various skills, which took place at St. Ita’s Catholic Church, Ibeme-Ugiri Isiala Mbano, in the state state.

The programme, which was held in collaboration with Africa Peer Review Mechanism and other partners, had the theme “Fighting Poverty, Discouraging Migration and Promoting Self Sufficiency.”

Akobundu explained that the 450 beneficiaries were drawn from the 27 local government areas of the state adding that 3,000 had already graduated and empowered in the past.

She said the aim of the programme was to make women and youths self reliant through skills acquisition and discourage the youths from illegal migration as well as alleviate poverty.

Akobundu said that one of the top priorities of the present administration was capacity building targeting women and youth at the community level.

The coordinator advised the beneficiaries, who she said, were empowered with start- up capitals, to make judicious use of the training and money.

She advised those present at the occasion, to consolidate on the gains of the “change initiative” and to continue the empowerment.

“The present administration under president Buhari has done well in the area of empowerment, infrastructure and agriculture development and fighting of corruption.

“He has encouraged local production of goods and services, especially for farmers.

“His coming back is to consolidate on the gains of the Change Initiative, enhance infrastructure development and complete ongoing projects,” she said.

I'd rather be underrated and overpaid

Than be overrated and underpaid
