Pastor Adegboyega Nursery and Primary School, Ketu, Lagos, has suffered a fresh round of theft as the yet-to-be identified hoodlums swooped on the school during the week.

This time, in addition to the vandalised roofs, iron gates and windows, the hoodlums carted awar reading books for Primary Three and Four pupils.

However, following heavy rainfall last week, hasty arrangements were made for the pupils whose classroom roofs and windows were vandalised to take their lessons within the school premises.

A source close to the school disclosed to DAILY INDEPENDENT that the willful vandalisation of items and buildings within the school compound had been on for some time, saying that the climax was the complete removal of zinc roofing sheets, windows, gates, electrical wirings, books among other valuables belonging to the school.

“The challenge facing the school is far beyond what the School Based Management Committee (SBMC) and parents forum can handle because of its enormous cost. We have involved the community, the traditional rulers, the Local Government Education Authority and the police but to no avail.

“The government should come to our assistance to secure the school ground by erecting perimeter fencing behind the main building backing the expressway and Ogunbanwo Street, restore the roofs and vandalised windows,” she pleaded.

However, when DAILY INDEPENDENT spoke with Dr. Ganiyu Sopeyin, the Executive Chairman, Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), he acknowledged and expressed worries on the challenges facing the school.

He said: “There is nothing more we can do other than to secure the school. These hoodlums are everywhere and we are working on a respite.”

Sopeyin, who challenged host communities to take firm ownership of schools, said the board was also worried and not happy about the development.
