Miss Awunor Onyeka denied herself the leisure of engaging in the social media spree to concentrate on her studies. Speaking with our correspondent, she said it paid off as she recently emerged the best graduating student of Bingham University, Nasarawa State with 4.95 Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA).

Miss Onyeka who was elated about the feat during the third combined convocation ceremony of the university described it as the fruit of hard work. She said: "I feel great to be the best graduating student and to have been identified by the university management.

"I worked towards it as an undergraduate; I tried to make my result better than that of the previous semester after many sleepless nights that culminated in me graduating as an Industrial Chemist.

Our correspondent had observed Awunor clutching a simple modern version of the Nokia 3310 model that does not connect to the internet. Asked why she would prefer that over an android phone, she said many of her friends have been teasing her for not being actively involved in the youthful trend of being a social media person.

She said more time was given to her study and then some little time for Whatsapp, but nothing more. "I may join other social media platforms later when I am less busy," Awunor noted.

The young graduate who had early and secondary school in Lagos State, then transiting to the North central area for her tertiary education said she has been exposed to many virtues that include tolerance and understanding among Nigerians.

On her career choice, being a fresh graduate, she said: "I underwent my mandatory industrial attachment at the Nigeria Bottling Company, (NBC), and now as a graduate, after the mandatory one year National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), I want to start manufacturing and be a part time lecturer."

Miss Awunor has some runner-ups in the trail blazing academic records: the two high scoring first class graduates are Miss Oyemenda Omon from Sociology department and Ezeigwe Lawrence Somto graduated from Accounting. In all, there were 33 First Class graduates among the 696 first degree graduates.

At the ceremony, the acting Vice Chancellor, Professor Barnabas Qurix said 299 graduates made Second Class Upper, 278,45 got Second Class Lower division, 45 made Third Class and two had Pass.

The Pro-Chancellor, General Martin Luther Agwai (Rtd) said, "Bingham University was established by ECWA Church about 13 years ago and in this combined graduation, 36 of the graduates are medical doctors and three eminent Nigerians were selected for honorary degrees."
